Kellner was born in Manhattan, New York to a psychologist / photographer mother and classical Greek scholar squash player / father who was a Hungarian immigrant. She attended Vassar College and then the New York University Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, where she graduated in 1995. Kellner lives in New York. and is married to Reuben Avery, photographer and computer programmer, and has one son, Ewen Joseph Avery. His parents George and Martha Kellner, in May 1970, survived the crash of flight ALM 980 in the Caribbean. At that time, Martha Kellner was pregnant with Catherine.
