Cecil James Sharp is an English born musician and composer who was at the forefront of the revival of folk music in England as a collector, archivist, teacher and promoter. He collected thousands of tunes from both the English countryside and the Appalachian region of the southern United States, and wrote an influential volume, British Folk Songs: Some Conclusions. Based on his research on surviving rural folk dances as well as written sources, he gathered, organized and disseminated the underlying practices of British country dance and Morris dance. In 1911, he co-founded the British Folk Dance Association. Sharp's legacy lives on, as enthusiastic attendees across North America and the UK show off the folklore content that has been gathered by Sharp for more than a century.
