John Chandler Harper is an American professional golfer, famous for winning the PGA Championship in 1950. He won the PGA Tour seven times and played in the Ryder Cup in 1955. Harper was born, raised and lived through. life in Portsmouth, Virginia. . He played a pivotal role in Virginia golf, winning the Virginia State Amateur three times and the Virginia State Open nine times, a record that still stands today. His golf career was interrupted while serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Harper's competitive career lasted from 1938 to 1955; and like most professional golfers of his generation, he spent most of his time as a pro club. Harper made up for his lack of driving distance with a powerful short game; Ben Hogan says Harper is the Tour's best hitter. After Curtis Strange's father passed away at the age of 14, Harper became Strange's mentor. He is also a longtime friend of Bobby Jones.
