He was born in Seattle, Washington to Cyril Percival Wood and Edith Florence Chamberlain. He graduated from Sequoia Union High School in Redwood City, California.
He made his Broadway debut in a 1945 production of "Up in Central Park."
With his wife, Adelaide Marchena, he had three daughters and two sons.
He co-starred with Alfred Drake in the original Broadway production of "Kiss Me, Kate."
