He was a member of the Florida United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 1989, and then a senator from 1989 to 2001. He was also president of the Conference of the Republic of the Senate from 1997 to 2001. He has served been considered for the post of GOP deputy. Presidential nomination of Bob Dole in 1996 and George W. Bush in 2000. Jack Kemp and Dick Cheney were chosen to replace him, respectively. He is the nephew of Connie Mack, former owner and manager of Philadelphia Athletics baseball, and a member of Baseball Fame Hall.
