David Kenneth Ritz Van Ronk is an American folk singer. A key figure in the revival of American folk music and the New York setting in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, he was nicknamed "mayor of MacDougal Street". Van Ronk's works range from old British ballads to blues, gospel, rock, New Orleans jazz and swing. He is also known to have performed the ragtime guitar, especially his translations of "St. Louis Tickle" and "Maple Leaf Rag" by Scott Joplin. Van Ronk is a widely admired celebrity in the "Village", presiding over cafe folklore and acting as a friend to many emerging artists by inspiring, supporting and motivating them. Folk artists he befriended are Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Patrick Sky, Phil Ochs, Ramblin 'Jack Elliott and Joni Mitchell.
