On January 27, 1945, he was a fencer and a World War II Soviet soldier who assisted in the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. He was a survivor of the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, two of the fiercest engagements on the Eastern Front. He was Auschwitz's last surviving liberator. By 1951, he had risen to the top of the Soviet Union's fencing rankings. He went on to coach the women's national fencing squad of the Soviet Union.
