David Whiston grew up in Yorkshire, England and learned the violin from a young age. He first appeared on television at the age of 12. A year later, he won first prize at the Blackpool Music Festival. At the age of 14, Whiston was the youngest student to win a major scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. In 1957, he gave his first show at the Leighton House Museum. He also won the Ricketts Awards from the Royal College of Music. His violin teacher was Erich Gruenberg. From the age of 17, he worked regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra and toured the world with it in the early 1960s. He then performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Georgiadis at the time. Over the next two decades, he performed with all of London's major orchestras, becoming co-conductor of the Royal Symphony Orchestra.
