DeFord Bailey
DeFord Bailey was an American blues and country music star from the 1920s to 1941. He was the first performer to be featured on the Grand Ole Opry, the first African American performer in the Chapter show and was the first performer to record his music in Nashville. Bailey played several musical instruments during his career, but he is best known for his playing on the harmonica, commonly referred to as the "Harmonica Wizard". Born and raised in Tennessee, Bailey learned to play the harmonica while recovering from polio as a child. He moved to Nashville with his parents as a teenager and was one of the first to make a major contribution to Nashville's burgeoning music industry. Among the first generation of artists performing live on radio, his recorded compositions were widely known and loved. Bailey toured and performed with many famous country artists in the 1930s.
