Dian Fossey is an American conservationist and primate best known for conducting an in-depth study of mountain gorilla groups from 1966 until her death in 1985. She studies them daily in the mountainous forests of Rwanda, initially encouraged to work there by paleontologist Louis Leakey. Gorillas in the Mist, a book published two years before his death, is Fossey's account of gorilla scientific research at the Karisoke Research Center and his earlier career. It was adapted into a movie of the same name in 1988. Fossey is one of the world's top primates, a member of "Trimate", a group of famous female scientists originally named Leakey. sent out to study great apes in their natural environment, with Jane Goodall, who studied chimpanzees, and Birutė Galdikas, who studied orangutans.
