Edward Coles is an American plantation owner and politician, elected as the second governor of Illinois. Coming from a longtime family in Virginia, Coles was a young neighbor and associate of Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, as well as President James Madison's secretary. An anti-slavery advocate throughout his adult life, Coles inherited a plantation and slaves, but eventually left Virginia for Illinois territory in order to free his slaves. He used 19 slaves in 1819 and bought land from them. In Illinois, he twice led political campaigns to prevent the legalization of slavery in the new state. Coles corresponded and advised Jefferson and Madison to free their slaves. During his later years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he helped form historians' first views on the Republican ideal of presidents.
