Edward Dmytryk is a Canadian-American director. He is known for his 1940s noir films and received an Oscar nomination for Best Director for Crossfire. In 1947, he was named one of Hollywood's Thirteenths, a group of blacklisted film professionals who refused to testify before the House Committee on non-American activities. in their investigations during the 'Red Scare of the McCarthy' period. They all go to jail for contempt for Congress. However, in 1951, Dmytryk testified at HUAC and restored his career. First recruited by independent producer Stanley Kramer in 1952, Dmytryk is perhaps best known for making The Caine Mutiny, a critical and commercial success. Second highest grossing film of the year, nominated for Best Picture and several other awards at the 1955 Academy Awards. Dmytryk was nominated for the Directors Association's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film .
