Frederick Samuel Duesenberg is an American-German car and engine designer, builder and operator, internationally renowned as a designer of racing and racing engines. Duesenberg's technical expertise influenced the development of automobiles, particularly during the 1910s and 1920s. He is said to have introduced the 8-cylinder engine, also known as the Duesenberg.8 straight engine, and the hydraulic brake system to four-wheeler, the first engine for American cars, among other mechanical innovations. Duesenberg also holds patents for his designs for hydraulic four-wheel brakes, early automatic transmission and cooling systems, among others. Fred and his brother, August "Augie" Duesenberg, shared the patent, filed in 1913 and renewed in 1918, for their four-cylinder "walking beam" engines and Duesenberg Straight 8 .
