George Dewey
George Dewey is the Navy Admiral, the only person in US history to achieve this rank. He is known for his victory in the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish War against the Americans, with the only loss of a crew member to the American side. Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont. At the age of 15, Dewey's father enrolled at the University of Norwich, Northfield, Vermont. Two years later, Norwich kicked him out for being drunk and took him to the barracks. In short, he entered the United States Naval Academy in 1854. He graduated from the academy in 1858 and was appointed executive lieutenant of the USS Mississippi at the start of the Civil War. He took part in capturing New Orleans and besieging Hudson Harbor, helping the Union gain control of the Mississippi River. At the end of the war, Dewey reached the rank of lieutenant in command.
