George Mason IV was an American plantation owner, politician and a delegate to the US Constitutional Convention of 1787, one of three delegates who refused to sign the Constitution. His writings, including key parts of the Fairfax Resolutions of 1774, the Virginia Bill of Rights of 1776, and his objections to the ratification of the Constitution by this Government, influenced significantly to American ideology and policies. The Virginia Declaration of Human Rights, of which Mason is the principal author, serves as the basis of the United States Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document of which he is regarded as the father. Mason was born in 1725, most likely in present-day Fairfax County, Virginia. His father died when he was a child and his mother managed the family fortune until she came of age.
