Giambattista Marino is an Italian poet born in Naples. He is best known for his long epic L'Adone. Cambridge's Italian literary history considers him "one of the greatest Italian poets of all time." He is considered the founder of the school of Marinism, later known as Secentismo or Marinismo, characterized by its use of wild and overly presumptuous nature. Marino's concept of poetry, which exaggerates Manne's artificiality, is based on his extensive use of antithesis and a variety of puns, lavish descriptions and sultry music in The Verse, and has had a great success in his day, was comparable to that of Petrarch before him. He is widely imitated in Italy, France, Spain and other Catholic countries, notably in Portugal and Poland, as well as in Germany, where his closest followers are Christian Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau and in the Netherlands, where Constantijn Huygens admired.
