Gifford Pinchot is an American forester and politician. He was the 4th Head of the United States Forest Service, the First Chief of the US Forestry Department, and the 28th Governor of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Republican Party for most of his life, although he briefly joined the Progressive Party. Born into a wealthy Pinchot family, Gifford Pinchot began his career in forestry after graduating from Yale University in 1889. President William McKinley appointed Pinchot to head the Forestry Department in 1898, and Pinchot became the first director of the US Forest Service. after its founding in 1905. Pinchot had a close relationship with President Theodore Roosevelt, who shared Pinchot's views on the importance of conservation.
