Edward Gough Whitlam was Australia's 21st Prime Minister, serving from 1972 to 1975. He led the ruling Australian Labor Party for the first time in 23 years in the 1972 election. Elected in 1974 before being challenged by the Governor General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, at the height of Australia's constitutional crisis of 1975. Whitlam remained the only Australian Prime Minister to be removed in this manner. Whitlam served as an aviation pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force for four years during World War II and as a lawyer after the war. He was first elected to Parliament in 1952, representing Werriwa in the House of Representatives. Whitlam became Deputy Head of the Labor Party in 1960, and in 1967, after Arthur Calwell retired, was elected Leader and became Leader of the opposition.
