Hanna Holborn Gray is an American historian of Renaissance and Reformation political thought and Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Chicago. She was president of the University of Chicago from 1978 to 1993, before becoming president of Yale University in 1977-1978. In both schools, she was the first woman to hold their highest leadership position. When she was appointed to this post in Chicago, she became one of the first women in the United States to serve as dean of a major university.
