Johannes Peter "Hans" Riegel, Hans Riegel Jr. is a German businessman who has owned and operated Haribo Confectionery since 1946. Born in Bonn, he is the eldest son of company founder Hans Riegel, Sr., who has invented the plastic bear candy in 1922. The company's name, Haribo, is derived from the first two letters of his name and his hometown. A graduate of the Jesuit boarding school Aloisiuskolleg, he obtained his doctorate in 1951 at the University of Bonn with a thesis "The development of the world sugar industry during and after the Second World War". In 1953, he was elected the first president of the German badminton association after winning the German men's doubles championship. In 1954 and 1955, he won the men's and women's doubles title. That same year, he organized the construction of Germany's first indoor badminton court, called the Haribo-Center, in Bonn. Riegel owns the Jakobsburg Hotel and the Golf Resort near Boppard in the Rhine Valley in Germany.
