Sir Harold Mario Mitchell Acton is an English writer, scholar and talent who is a prominent member of Bright Young Things. He wrote novels, biographies and autobiographies. While in China, he learned the Chinese language, traditional theater and poetry, some of which he translated. He was born near Florence, Italy, to an important Anglo-Italian family. At Eton University, he was a founding member of the Eton Arts Society before coming to Oxford to read The Modern Greats at Christ Church. He co-founded the pioneering magazine The Oxford Broom and interacted with many intellectual and literary figures of the time, including Evelyn Waugh, who relied in part on his character Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisited. Between the wars, Acton lived in Paris, London and Florence, proving himself to be the most successful as an historian, and his book is a three-volume study of the Medici and Bourbons.
