Harold Hitz Burton is an American politician and lawyer. He was the 45th mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, a United States Senator from Ohio, and an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Born in Boston, Burton practiced law in Cleveland after graduating from Harvard Law School. After serving in the United States Army in World War I, Burton was active in Republican politics and won election to the Ohio House of Representatives. After serving as mayor of Cleveland, Burton won election to the US Senate in 1940. After Deputy Attorney Owen J. Roberts, President Harry S. retired. Truman successfully appointed Burton to the Supreme Court. Burton served at the Court until 1958, when he succeeded Potter Stewart. Burton is known as a fair, pragmatic and somewhat complex law who prefers to make judgments based on techniques and procedures rather than on constitutional grounds.
