Henry Cavendish
Henry Cavendish FRS is an English philosopher, natural scientist, and prominent theoretical and experimental physicist and chemist. He was known to have discovered hydrogen, which he called "flammable air". He described the density of flammable air, which forms water when burned, in a 1766 article, On Factitious Airs. Antoine Lavoisier then recreated the Cavendish experience and named the element. A notably shy man, Cavendish is however distinguished by his excellent accuracy and precision in studying the composition of the atmosphere in the atmosphere, the properties of various gases, the synthesis of water, laws governing electric attraction and repulsion, a mechanical theory of heat, and calculations of Earth's density. His experiment to measure the density of the Earth is called the Cavendish experiment.
