Ira Gershwin is an American lyricist who collaborated with his brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable English songs of the 20th century. With George, he wrote over a dozen Broadway shows, including songs like "I Got Rhythm", "Embraceable You", "The Man I Love" and "Someone To See Me". He is also responsible, with DuBose Heyward, for the libretto for George's Porgy and Bess. The success of the Gershwin brothers with their collaborative works has often overshadowed Ira's creative role. However, his writing skills continued after George's untimely death. He wrote other hit songs with composers Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Harry Warren and Harold Arlen. His critically acclaimed 1959 lyric book, a collection of annotated autobiographies and anthologies, was an important source of research into the lyric's art of the era, the golden age of famous American songs.
