Irène Joliot-Curie
Irène Joliot-Curie is a Polish-French chemist, physicist and politician, the eldest daughter of Marie Curie and Pierre Curie, and wife of Frédéric Joliot-Curie. With her husband, Joliot-Curie received the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of radioactive substances. This makes the Curies the family with the most Nobel Prize winners to date. She was also one of the first three women to be members of the French government, becoming deputy minister of scientific research for the Popular Front in 1936. Joliot-Curies' two children, Hélène and Pierre, were also eminent scientists. In 1945, she was one of six members of the Commission for New Atomic and Alternative Energy of France created by de Gaulle and the Provisional Government of the French Republic. She died in Paris on March 17, 1956 of an acute leukemia linked to her exposure to polonium and to X-rays
