She was a Member of the Redditch Parliament from 1997 to 2010, the first woman Home Secretary and the third woman to hold one of the major state offices, after Margaret Thatcher and Margaret Beckett. She resigned as Home Secretary on June 5, 2009 after being embroiled in a parliamentary spending scandal in the UK in which she perjured that a room in her sister's house was her primary residence. Smith, the most famous figure involved in the scandal, then lost her parliamentary seat to Redditch in the 2010 general election. After leaving the House of Representatives, she remained openly active as a political expert and assumed many roles in many fields, such as as health and media.
