James G. Birney
James Gillespie Birney is an abolitionist, politician, and lawyer born in Danville, Kentucky. He published a weekly abolitionist publication called The Charity and was a two-time presidential candidate for the Anti-Slavery Liberal Party. Birney pursued a legal career in Danville after graduating from the University of New Jersey and studying at Alexander J. Dallas. He volunteered to join Henry Clay's campaigns, served on the city council, and became a Freemasonry. In 1816, he won election to the Kentucky House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. In 1818, he established a cotton plantation in Madison County, Alabama, and he won election to the Alabama House of Representatives the following year. Birney eventually sold the plantation and founded a law firm in Huntsville, Alabama, becoming one of the most successful attorneys in the area. During the 1820s, Birney became increasingly interested in the slave problem.
