James Henry Hammond is a South Carolina lawyer, politician, and plantation owner. He was the representative of the United States from 1835 to 1836, the 60th governor of South Carolina from 1842 to 1844, and the United States senator from 1857 to 1860. He is considered one of the leading spokespersons for slavery in the United States. years leading up to the American Civil War. Acquiring property by marriage, he eventually owned 22 square miles, several plantations and houses, and over 300 slaves. Through his family, he is Wade Hampton II's brother-in-law and uncle to his children, including Wade Hampton III. When the Hampton executive learned that Hammond had raped Hampton's four granddaughters as a teenager, he went public with the scandal. This was thought to have deflected Hammond's career at first, but was later elected to the US Senator.
