James Kirke Paulding is an American writer and a time Secretary of the US Navy. Paulding's early works were satirical and fiercely anti-British, as shown in The History of Redirects by John Bull and Brother Jonathan. He wrote many long poems and serious stories. Among his novels were Konigsmarke, Long Finne and The Dutchman's Fireside. He is best known for creating the inimitable Nimrod Wildfire, "half horse, half crocodile" in The Lion of the West, and for collaborating with William Irving and Washington Irving in Salmagundi. Paulding also entered in the mid-1830s, an ardent and Frankish Guardian of slavery, and then approved the southern secession of the alliance.
