James Bond Stockdale is the Vice Admiral of the United States Navy and the pilot received the Vietnam War Medal of Honor, while a POW for over seven years. Stockdale is the highest ranking naval officer detained in Hanoi, northern Vietnam. He commanded airstrikes from the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga during the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964. On the next deployment, while commanding the sixteen air defense forces aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, his A-4 Skyhawk plane was shot down in North Vietnam. September 9, 1965. He was rector of Naval War College from October 1977 until his retirement from the navy in 1979. As Vice Admiral, Stockdale served as President of the Citadel from 1979 to 1980. Stockdale was running for the United States running for president in the 1992 presidential election, on the independent ticket of Ross Perot.
