Jan and Dean are an American rock duo consisting of William Jan Berry and Dean Ormsby Torrence. In the early 1960s, they were the pioneers of California Sound and the vocal style of surf music was popularized by the Beach Boys. Among their most successful songs is "Surf City" from 1963, the first surf song to reach the top of the Hot 100. Their other top 10 singles are "Drag City", "Dead Man's Curve". and "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena". In 1972, Torrence won the Grammy Award for Best Album Cover for the debut album by the psychedelic rock band Pollution of the same name in 1971, and was nominated for three more times in the same category for The Nitty Gritty Albums. Dirt Band. In 2013, Torrence's design contribution to the CD at the Surf City Allstars concert was honored with the Excellence Silver in the Communicator Awards.
