Before taking the presidency, he was governor of the Banque de France from 1993. until 2003 under presidents François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac. After retiring from the European Central Bank, Trichet executed speech deals throughout France and served on the board of directors of the Bank for International Settlements. He was invited to join Bruegel's non-doctrinal thought organization to conduct economic policy consultations. In 2008, Trichet ranked 5th in the list of the most powerful people in the world of Newsweek along with economic trio Ben Bernanke and Masaaki Shirakawa.
