Jean Toomer
Jean Toomer is an American poet and novelist often associated with the Harlem Renaissance, although he is actively opposed to associationism and modernism. His reputation stems from the novel Cane, which Toomer wrote during and after a stint as a principal at a black school in rural Sparta, Georgia. The novel combines the stories of six women and covers an apparently autobiographical theme; The sociologist Charles S. Johnson called him "the most surprising brilliant start of any black writer of his generation." He is against being classified as a black writer, as he identified him as "American". For a time, Toomer was a follower of the spiritual teacher G.I. Gurdjieff. Later in life he followed Quakerism. Toomer continued to write poems, short stories, and essays. His first wife died shortly after the birth of their daughter. After getting married again in 1934, Toomer and his family moved from New York to Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
