John Backus
John Warner Backus is an American computer scientist. He led the team to invent and implement FORTRAN, the first widely used high-level programming language and inventor of the Backus-Naur form, a notation widely used to define the syntax of the language. He then studied the Functional Programming Model, presenting his findings in his influential 1977 Turing Prize lecture "Can Programming Be Free from the Von Neumann Style." The IEEE awarded Backus the W. W. McDowell Prize in 1967 for the development of FORTRAN. He was awarded the National Science Medal in 1975 and the Turing Prize in 1977 "for his profound, influential and enduring contributions to the design of high-level practical programming systems, particularly in the field of communication. Through his work on FORTRAN and the publication of formal processes for the specification of programming languages. ”He retired in 1991 and died at his home in Ashland, Oregon on March 17, 2007.
