He is the son of the mayor of Albany, George Thacher, and the mayor's uncle, John Boyd Thacher II. Thacher was born in Ballston, New York, graduated from Williams College in 1869 and settled in Albany, New York. He became an active researcher in writing after graduating from college and was also active in his father's business, Thacher Car Wheel Works, one of Albany's main industries. Upon his father's death in 1887, John and his brother George became the owners of the business. Thacher is the father of Ebby Thacher, who is credited with bringing in Bill Wilson, founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, to the Oxford group as a model for the latter's scholarship.
