John Jay
John Jay was an American politician, patriot, diplomat, founding father, abolitionist, negotiator and signer of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. He was New's second governor York and was the first chief justice of the United States. He directed US foreign policy for much of the 1780s and was an important leader of the Federal Party after the ratification of the US Constitution in 1788. Jay was born into a wealthy family of business and government officials in New York City, French and Dutch Huguenots. He became a lawyer and joined the New York Correspondence Commission, which organized American protests against British policies such as the American Revolution Impossible Act. Jay was elected to the Continental Congress for the second time and served as President of the National Assembly. From 1779 to 1782 Jay was ambassador to Spain; he persuaded Spain to provide financial aid to the nascent United States.
