Klaus Emil Julius Fuchs is a German theoretical physicist and atomic spy, who provided information from the US, British and Canadian Manhattan projects to the Soviet Union during and shortly after World War II. While working at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Fuchs was responsible for many important theoretical calculations regarding the early nuclear weapons and later early models of the hydrogen bomb. After being sentenced in 1950, he spent nine years in prison in England, then moved to East Germany, where he continued his career as a major physicist and scientist. The son of a Lutheran pastor, Fuchs attended the University of Leipzig, where his father was a professor of theology, and joined student politics, joining the student branch of the Social Democratic Party.
