Leon Fleisher
Leon Fleisher is an American classical pianist, conductor and educator. He is one of the most famous pianists and educators in the world. Music reporter Elijah Ho calls him "one of the finest and most sublime musicians ever produced by the United States". Born in San Francisco, Fleisher began playing piano at the age of four and began studying with Artur Schnabel at the age of 9. He is particularly famous for his interpretations of the two Brahms piano concerts and the five Beethoven concerts, which he recorded with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. With Szell, he also recorded concerts by Mozart, Grieg, Schumann, Franck and Rachmaninoff. In 1964, he lost the ability to use his right hand due to a neurological condition that was eventually diagnosed with focal dystonia, forcing him to focus on left-hand performances, such as the Concert piano for Ravel's left hand and many compositions written for him.
