Mark McGowan is a politician of the Australian Workers' Party who has served as Western Australia Prime Minister since March 17, 2017. Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, McGowan attended Casino Public School and High School. Casino. McGowan then went to the University of Queensland and worked as a lawyer for the Royal Australian Navy, serving at the HMAS Stirling Naval Base, south of Perth. Settling in Western Australia, McGowan was elected Rockingham City Councilmember in 1994 and later elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly in the 1996 election, representing Rockingham County. In 2001, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Geoff Gallop and then as Cabinet Minister of the Gallop and Carpenter governments from 2005 to 2008. McGowan was elected leader of the Labor Party in Western Australia. January 2012, after Eric Ripper resigned. and become the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
