Marlon Williams, better known as Marley Marl, is an American DJ, record producer, rapper and record company founder, active primarily in the hip hop genre. Marlon grew up on housing projects in Queensbridge located in Queens, New York. He became interested in music, performing in local talent shows, in the early days of rapping. He was also featured in Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full" from their debut album, also recorded in his studio. As a producer, one notable project is LL Cool J.'s Mama Said Knock You Out. He is said to have influenced a number of hip hop icons like RZA, DJ Premier and Pete Rock. Producer Madlib said in an interview that Marley was the first producer to inspire him to create rhythms. Vibe Magazine wrote that it "changed the tone of hip-hop forever with its unique beat".
