Max Delbruck
Max Ludwig Henning Delbrück, a German-American physiologist, helped launch a research program in molecular biology in the late 1930s, particularly basic research to physically explain genes, a mystery at the time. Founded in 1945 and led by Delbrück with Salvador Luria and Alfred Hershey, the Phage group made significant progress in discovering important aspects of genetics. All three shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the replication mechanism and genetic structure of the virus". He was the first physicist to predict what is now known as Delbrück scattering.
