Mercedes Ritchie Lackey is an American fiction writer. Many of his novels and trilogies are related and take place in the world of Velgarth, primarily in and around the land of Valdemar. His novel Valdemar includes human and non-human interactions with many different cultures and societies. Its other main world is similar to ours, but it includes secret populations of goblins, wizards, vampires, and other mythical creatures. The books of Bedlam's Bard describe a young man able to create magic through music; the SERRAted Edge books on racing elves; and the horror film Diana Tregarde revolves around a Wiccan against evil. She has also released a number of popular remakes of fairy tales set between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, in which the magic is real, although hidden from the secular world. These novels explore questions of ecology, social class and gender roles.
