Nancy Laura Spungen is Sid Vicious's American girlfriend and a character in the punk rock scene of the 1970s. Spungen's life and death have been the subject of controversy between music historians and fans of Sex Pistols. . Raised as a Jew in Philadelphia, Spungen was an emotionally disturbed child who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 15. After being expelled from college, she went to London during the peak of the punk rock movement and was involved in a relationship with Vicious. Their relationship was severed by waves of domestic violence and drug addiction. The press quickly called Spungen "Nauseating Nancy" because of his outrageous and often anti-social behavior. After Sex Pistols disbanded, the couple moved to New York and settled at the Chelsea hotel, where they spend most of their time abusing drugs, especially heroin. In October 1978, Spungen was found dead in the couple's bathroom, with a stab wound in the stomach.
