Nig Cuppy
George Joseph "Nig" Cuppy was an American baseball pitcher in the 1890s. He spent 9 years of his 10-year career in his major league as number two starting after Cy Young. Cuppy's birth name is George Maceo Koppe in Washington Township, Preble County, Ohio. His rookie season came to the Cleveland Spiders in 1892, two years after Cy Young made his team debut. In his first season, Cuppy scored an ERA of 2.51 and a record of 28–13, a performance that surpassed one of Young's first two major seasons. However, Cuppy was never able to match these parameters. In 1893, the distance between the pitcher's mound and the home ground was reduced from 50 feet to 60 feet 6 inches. Although he remained an effective pitcher for the rest of his career, after this rule was adopted, he never recorded an ERA below 3.00. On August 9, 1895, Cuppy scored five runs against the Chicago Colts in an 18-6 victory, the most runs a pitcher has ever scored in a major tournament baseball game.
