Noah Webster Jr. is an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English spelling reformer, political writer, publisher and author. He has been called "the father of American scholarships and education". His book "The Seller of Blue" taught five generations of American children how to spell and read. Webster's name has become synonymous with "dictionary" in the United States, particularly the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary first published in 1828 as the American Dictionary of the English Language. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, Webster graduated from Yale University in 1778. He passed the law exam after studying law by Oliver Ellsworth and others, but was unable to find a job as a lawyer. He has had some financial success by opening a private school and writing a series of educational books, including "Blue-Backed Speller".
