Penelope Ying-Yen Wong is an Australian politician, serving as Senator of South Australia since 2002. She was Leader of the Australian Labor Party Senate since 2013 and is currently the Leader of the opposition in The Senate. She served as cabinet minister for the Rudd and Gillard governments from 2007 to 2013. Born in Malaysia to an Australian mother and Malaysian father, Wong attended Scotch College in Adelaide, then attended the University of Adelaide, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. Before joining the Federal Parliament, Wong worked as an attorney and political advisor. Wong has been described by her biographer as "disciplined, intellectual, private, restrained and sane." In 2008, she became the first Asian member of an Australian law firm.
