Phineas Banning is an American businessman, financier and businessman. Known as the “Father of the Port of Los Angeles,” he is one of the founders of the city of Wilmington, Los Angeles County, California, named after his birthplace. His motivation and ambition laid the foundation for what would become one of the busiest ports in the world. In addition to running an independent business, Banning runs a theater coaching line between San Pedro and Wilmington, then between Banning, Calif., Named in his honor, and Yuma, Arizona. During the Civil War, he ceded land to the Union Army to build a fortress in Wilmington, Barracks Drum. He was appointed brigade commander of the 1st Militia Brigade and used the title of general until the end of his life.
