Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the guru and Pramukh, or president of Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, a major branch of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, a Hindu sect. BAPS considers him the fifth spiritual successor of Swaminarayan, after Gunatitan and Swami, Bhagatji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj. His disciples believed that he had always had fellowship with Swaminarayan and, ontologically, was the manifestation of Akshar, Swaminarayan's eternal abode. He was appointed by Shastriji Maharaj, founder of BAPS, who appointed him as BAPS president in 1940. Yogiji Maharaj proclaimed Pramukh Swami Maharaj as the spiritual successor and guru of BAPS, the role he began to play in. in 1971. As President of BAPS, he has overseen the development of BAPS from a centralized organization in Gujarat, India, to one that spans the globe, maintaining multiple agencies and Hindu center outside India.
