Richard Bentley
Richard Bentley FRS is an English scholar, critic, and classical theologian. Considered the "founder of historical linguistics", Bentley is widely recognized with the founding of the Greek school in England. In 1892, A. E. Housman called Bentley "the greatest scientist the UK or perhaps Europe has ever advanced". Bentley's dissertation on the Phalaris Clerical, published in 1699, proves that the letters mentioned, believed to have been written in the 6th century BC by the Sicilian tyrant Phalaris, were in fact forged by a Greek sophist created in the 2nd century AD. . Bentley's investigation on the subject is still considered a major milestone among text critics. He also points out that the sound expressed in phonetic versions of some Greek dialects with the letter digamma also appears in Homeric poetry, although it is not shown there by any letter. Bentley became an MA from Trinity University, Cambridge in 1700 .
