Friedrich Robert Donat is an English film and theater actor. He is best remembered for his roles in the films The 39 Steps and Goodbye, Mr. Chips by Alfred Hitchcock, later won the Oscar for Best Actor. In his book, The Age of the Dream Palace, Jeffrey Richards wrote that Donat was "the undisputed first romantic man of British cinema of the 1930s". "The image he portrays is that of a romantic idealist, usually an adventurous gentleman." Donat suffers from chronic asthma, which affects his career and leaves him appearing in only 20 films. Until Philip Seymour Hoffman's death in 2014, Donat was the Oscar winner for Best Actor in the shortest possible time.
